Top 10 Do’s and Don’ts of Security System Signs
One of the most often overlooked difference-makers in the home security arena might quite possibly be the best practice as it relates to yard signs. The following Do’s and Don’ts will help you AND help your customers.
Do’s
- A professional yard sign is one of the most impactful ways to prevent break-ins. It’s also a mini-billboard for your company! Make sure your rep or technician installs a yard sign prior to completion. If you leave it up to the customer, they will not have the knowledge needed to place them most advantageously to prevent a burglary (or, they may even forget!).
- Place your sign 12-18 inches off the ground; this will maximize visibility while reducing wind interference. Also make sure it faces in a direction that targets traffic and is easily noticed.
- Mount your signs against walls or fences without a stake, if possible. This placement will often provide better support for your sign, will avoid the possibility of movement or damage during lawn maintenance.
- While it’s tempting to always place the lawn sign near the main entrance, which may not always be the best location in some homes. Make sure your team scopes out the entire area to see if a more central location exists and is more likely to be seen by a burglar.
- Adhering window and door decals throughout the property is as important as installing a lawn sign. Place decals at eye level on windows where a burglar will easily see them.
Don’ts
- Don’t look at your signage as a “one and done.” Snow storms, windstorms, and other kinds of harsh weather can often wreak havoc on yard signs. Use weather related activity as a way to reach out to your customers and ensure their signs are unscathed.
- Don’t underestimate the effect of landscaping. While you may place decals on windows, if large shrubs hide windows, they can still become targets for break-ins. Suggest that your customers keep their bushes clipped at window-height.
- Don’t cram too much information on to your yard sign. Simply include your logo and a statement of protection with a phone number or a web address. Concentrate more on making sure your sign has reflective material that can be seen easily at night.
- Don’t install yard signs without knowing the ordinances of the neighborhood. While some areas allow you to put your sign very close to the street, others require your sign to be 10 feet back. It’s important to be knowledgeable about the local laws where you do business.
- Don’t encourage the use of fake security system signs or decals. While many professionals will tell customers that “it’s better than nothing,” it actually can diminish the value of the “real” signs. If that happens, everyone suffers.
